Buy Fresh Buy Local

Since 2005 Geode RC&D has served as the co-coordinator for the Buy Fresh Buy Local Southeast Iowa. The Buy Fresh Buy Local Southeast Iowa Campaign consists of producers, grocers, restaurants, economic development organizations, businesses and organizations within the counties of Des Moines, Henry, Louisa and Lee striving to:
• Make it easier for residents of the 4-county area (Lee, Louisa, Henry, and Des Moines counties) to find locally grown fruits, vegetables meats & poultry, eggs, honey and other agricultural products.
• Encourage residents of our region to support our local treasures: farmers markets, family farms & orchards, local meat lockers, and businesses that serve or sell locally grown products.
• Stimulate the economic vitality of the Southeast Iowa region through strengthening the viability of independent farmers and businesses.

Accomplishments of the last year include the printing and distribution of 50,000 local food directories, two cooking events at the Burlington Farmers Market featuring The Drake Restaurant, Buy Fresh Buy Local Mondays at The Drake, two agri-toursim events, and a local foods meal in partnership with the Iowa Farmers Union, targeted at connecting local producers and institutional buyers.
